Memories from Anneka Lindholm
I met Melissa our freshman year at UW. We were in a FIG (first year interest group) and also both had some interest in potentially rowing. We were fast friends and she was such a bright light of joy, calm, and genuine friendship in that time. One thing I hated about UW was that it was so big, so if you didn’t have classes together, paths didn’t cross as much. But whenever we ran into each other, we’d run and give each other huge hugs. It always made my day to run into her. Our paths took us both all over the world, but I cherish the time we were close.
Melissa was bold, she was kind, she was loving, and she was FUN! We had so much fun. She was the first person I truly felt a connection with at UW, something I was so grateful for since I didn’t know anyone. Her spirit remains so joyful, that’s clear. I was touched by her warmth and love.
I am so sad that Melissa and I didn't stay in touch - it happens in life. I moved out of the country after school and I know she did too. Though we didn’t stay in touch, her spirit and energy always stayed with me - even to this day. My first child was born a couple of weeks before she passed and it hit me like a ton of bricks to find out four years later when I went back online she had passed. I’ve been replaying so many of our memories over the last couple of weeks. She was truly a safe haven in those first weeks of school. Thank you for raising such an amazing person.
Godspeed, Melissa.
